Software Engineer

Breadcrumb is an iPad-based point-of-sale app for restaurants. Ever noticed the terminal behind the bar at your favorite restaurant, or the station in the corner where the waiter enters your order and swipes your credit card? We're out to replace all of those with iPads and with our app. Breadcrumb is now hiring software engineers at all levels to build our vision of the future of restaurant software.

Our team faces technical challenges on many fronts: A point-of-sale app has to have high availability, since our customers use it to run their business. It has to be robust in the face of flaky local networks. Updates made on one terminal or on the web need to sync to all iPad stations in real time. And the UI has to be intuitive enough that restaurant employees can use it with minimal training.

If you join us, you'll be working on a small team of experienced engineers, with backgrounds including Amazon and Google. We own the full technology stack, client & server, as well as our own deployment infrastructure and ops engineering. Devs work closely with PM & design and have product/design input from the beginning of each iteration.


  • You must be a super-smart, highly articulate, generalist engineer—ready, willing and able to jump in on any part of the system.
  • You must be able to work independently and exhibit high overall judgment.
  • You should care more about the product and the customer than about your favorite framework or algorithm.
  • You don't need experience in iOS or server-side technologies—but you should be able to learn them quickly.
  • Candidates with degrees in computer science or engineering are preferred.

Software Engineer in Support

Breadcrumb is an iPad- and cloud-based point of sale system for restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes. As part of Breadcrumb, you have the chance to help revolutionize the way restaurants operate and the way customers interact, from the moment of discovering a place to go, to ordering, to paying.

As a member of the Breadcrumb support engineering team, you’ll be at the forefront of this transformational technology. You’ll interact with visionary customers, third-party developers, and the Breadcrumb engineering team. You’ll be surrounded by people who are passionate about re-invention, wicked smart, and believe that world-class support and operations are critical to customer success.

We are seeking people with strong technical skills. Experience as a systems administrator working with Linux or Unix? Do you know the advantages of working in a highly distributed virtual environment? Since we’re working in the cloud and with networks deployed in individual venues, you will need to be very comfortable with networking technologies including DNS, TCP/IP, SSL, DHCP as well as LAN and WLAN setup and troubleshooting. You’ll also need to be comfortable working with Breadcrumb’s sophisticated data model—complex SQL, backfills, migrations, etc. should be second nature to you. You’ll also be developing application code that extends Breadcrumb or helps it integrate with third party services.

Basic Qualifications

Must have demonstrated proficiency in these areas:

  • Systems administration (Linux)
  • Networking (DNS, TCP/IP)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Science/Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related field.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong customer focus
  • Strong multi-tasking skills
  • Self-starter who is excited about technology
  • Open to being part of an on-call rotation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with customers
  • Experience analyzing, troubleshooting, and providing solutions for technical issues
  • Expertise with load balancing, Apache, HAProxy
  • Programming / scripting experience (Python/Django preferred) and web development experience
  • Experience managing full application stacks from the OS up through custom applications
